Performance of "Grand Processional"

Sunday, Oct.27th, 2024 at Solomon Lutheran Church, Woodville, OH.  First performance of "Grand Processional" for Organ Solo (1963; 2024) Daniel R. Boyle, organist

My organ piece, GRAND PROCESSIONAL, began in the early 1960s as a Chaconne (a set of variations over a ground bass) for piano. Before it found its way out of my composition sketch book, however, I used the theme as a springboard for another setting, one for a trio of low wind instruments using a non-octave scale called by music theorist Nicolas Slonimsky the "disjunct tetrachord" scale.

Fast forward sixty years to the present decade and a revived interest on my part for the very conservative Chaconne (in Dorian mode). I included a version of it in my PIANO SONATA and then--thanks to Dan Boyle's crucial help with the registrations--it became an independent show-piece for organ to be used as a prelude or postlude for a church service or as a selection in an organ recital. The GRAND PROCESSIONAL for Organ Solo is dedicated to Daniel R. Boyle with deep gratitude and appreciation for his help in bringing this version into the light of day.
